National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week

Manhasset CASA and the Manhasset CASA Youth Committee Club hosted Alcohol, Drugs and the Teen Brain featuring Dr. Stephen Dewey an Investigator at the Center for Behavioral & Molecular Imaging at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at Northwell Health. The program, held at the Manhasset Public Library, was part of Manhasset CASA’s Power of Parenting Series sponsored by the Honorable Jack M. Martins, Manhasset Public Library and Manhasset CASA. Close to ninety parents, youth and community residents attended. As part of CASA's Generation Rx Safe Medication Practices for Life Grant Initiative, Sara Wong, Vice President of the CASA Youth Club, provided a presentation regarding safe medication practices and the importance of locking and disposing of medications. Mandarin Translation was available.

Over 250 parents, residents and students participated in Drug Trends & Young People: Understanding Today's Opioid Epidemic. The presentation featured the Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence (LICADD) and Linda Ventura, a Kings Park mom who shared her touching story about her son's struggle with sobriety and his subsequent death from a heroin overdose.

Their youth statement included recent statistics and facts regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes for our youth and the tendency of youth to migrate to traditional tobacco after using e-cigarettes.

In an effort to change the culture of binge drinking on college campuses, Manhasset CASA provides graduating seniors the resource Beyond Hangovers. In addition, Manhasset CASA emailed the Class of 2016 parents and caregivers to remind them to continuously talk with their college age sons and daughters about the consequences of excessive drinking. Jenna Tishler, Co-President, Manhasset Youth Committee Club hosted this youth centered prevention program that focused on the dangers and alternatives to underage drinking.

The Power of Youth airs Mondays at 6:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. starting Monday, June 20th through July on Channels 20 (Cablevision) and 37 (Verizon FIOS).

Our Power of Parenting Series featured Kevin A. Sabet, Ph.D., author, consultant, assistant professor and past advisor on drug policy to the Clinton, Bush and Obama U.S. presidential administrations. Dr. Sabet discussed current trends and issues in marijuana use and how it impacts us our youth. Dr. Sabet studied, researched, written about, and implemented drug policy for almost 20 years. Dr. Sabet is also the Director of the Drug Policy Institute at the University of Florida and an Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. With Patrick J.
