Parent Power
One national research center on substance
abuse calls “parent power” “the most underutilized weapon in efforts to
curb teen substance abuse.”
Parents are crucial to the success of
any efforts to combat the serious problem of underage drug and alcohol
use that exists in Manhasset. But to be effective, parents must
acknowledge the nature and scope of the problem, including their own
children’s statistically likely involvement at some point between grades
seven through twelve. Parents must receive accurate information about
the symptoms and effects of drug and alcohol use. Parents require
strategies for maintaining their leadership in the home. Finally,
parents need opportunities to network with each other, to monitor and
