2010 Manhasset CASA - SCA Red Ribbon Week Celebration

October 16th through October 24th

Manhasset CASA invited all residents to support Red Ribbon Week 2010 and join communities nation-wide to promote healthy, substance abuse free lifestyles.  Red Ribbon Week is our nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention and awareness program.  The red ribbon is a symbol of our commitment to substance abuse education and prevention. CASA encourages parents and grandparents to talk with their children/grandchildren about the dangers of substance abuse.  Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their message regarding substance abuse.

In our elementary schools, students celebrated the theme “Our School Rocks Drug Free” throughout the week of October 18th through October 22nd.  This year’s SCA Committee co-chairs were Rosa Stein, Peggy Gejdjis, Sylvia Medzhibovsky from Munsey Park and Erica Kinloch & Patrice Leone from Shelter Rock School.  Working with CASA, the co-chairs made every effort to be certain students and parents were conscious of the importance of living a healthy life.  In celebration, ribbons were distributed to parents as well as Manhasset businesses and clergy. Students wore wear red in support and decorated guitars to express healthy choices.

Kim Fanter, The Great Body Shop, spent Monday and Tuesday with elementary students, providing an interactive dialogue that included topics regarding the importance of healthy living, social and emotional health and a component concerning bullying and the bystander. The Great Body Shop Health Curriculum is followed in Manhasset’s elementary schools and is a nationally recognized comprehensive health and substance abuse prevention program. Below are pictures from the presentations of the Shelter Rock and Munsey Park Elementary Schools

2010 Red Ribbon Week Celebration theme. "Our School Rocks Drug Free" included a student activity where the children were asked to consider the healthy things they do for themselves, others and/or the world we live in.  Students were invited to draw, paint, collage, or cut out pictures from magazines and were encourange to feel free to add a poem or song to express the healthy choices they make.  Healthy choice guitars decorated both school hallways in abundance!

Under the direction of Ms. Caitlin Finley, the Middle School SADD club members promoted the theme “Believe, Achieve, Succeed…Drug Free” to fellow students.  Ms. Finley stated, “The students are very excited about participating in Red Ribbon Week 2010 and are eager to convey the important message of healthy living throughout the year.”
